Linda Evangelista - Supermodel Sues Doctors For Permanently Deforming Her And Ruining Her Career!

For several years now fans have been wondering what had happened to Linda Evangelista who disappeared from public life. In the 1990s she was one of the original supermodels and, alongside Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, dominated the catwalk and fashion magazines in the 80s and 90s. But when she disappeared from the public eye some began to get concerned. Every now and then there were reports in the media that Evangelista fell victim to her love of aesthetic medicine with fans commenting that she did not resemble herself. But what was the reason that the model became a recluse? What had made her “permanently deformed?” Read on to find out!

Linda Evangelista - The Beginning

The Canadian model was born in 1965 and since the start of her career in 1984, she has been regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential models of all time, having been featured on over 700 magazine covers. Evangelista has also been primarily been known as being the longtime ‘muse’ of photographer Steven Meisel, and thanks to their work together she also holds the record for her multiple appearances on the cover of Vogue Italia, all of which had been photographed by Meisel. She was also the model who famously said, “We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day.” Linda has also become a trendsetter when upon cutting her hair short in 1988 the look was nicknamed “the Linda” and only sparked many copies worldwide, it also benefited her career. Many had described her as the “chameleon” of the fashion industry and as a key figure among the five supermodels.

Linda Evangelista - Career

Her talent in modeling was evident. In 1985 she began working with Karl Lagerfeld, the late, head designer of Chanel, to whom she would eventually become a muse. When he spoke about her in an interview once he claimed that “There is not another model in the world as professional as she is.” Another of her many achievements in the world of fashion was that she became one of the first editorial models to successfully cross over into the world of runway modeling. During the span of her career, she modeled for fashion houses such as Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent, and Giorgio Armani among others. She was seen as one of the top models, to many she still is, and she worked in the industry until 1998 until she decided to retire. However, she later made a comeback in 2001 and continued her work in the industry until 2016.

Linda Evangelista - Disappearance From Public Life

About 5 years ago, it was as if Linda had completely disappeared from public life and vanished into the shadows. As time went on and she did not appear publically and recent photos of the model on her social media became scarce and often showed her somehow covering either her face or the side of her face, it got people talking. Plus adding into that the at-times unflattering paparazzi photos taken of her out and about, people soon began speculating that Evangelista, like many in the industry, had too fallen down the rabbit hole of plastic surgery, adding that from those photos she didn’t look like herself at all.

Linda Evangelista - Her Explanation

However, recently the Canadian model had taken to her social media to set the record straight and explain what has caused her to become such a recluse and hide away from the public eye. The 56-year-old revealed to her 900,000 Instagram followers that she had experienced a rare cosmetic side effect of the treatment five years ago which actually increased her fat cells. In the post, she wrote that she has been left, as the media had described, ‘unrecognizable’ and that it was the reason that while her peer’s careers have been thriving she had disappeared from the public eye. Linda also claimed that she has been brutally disfigured by the procedure which was the opposite of what she was promised.

Linda Evangelista - Was Not Aware Of The Risks

The procedure that Evangelista undertook is known as “Cool Sculpting” and as she developed complications, the possibilities of which she claims she was not made aware of, her appearance started to change drastically. Evangelista had said that she had developed Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia, which is a rare, previously unreported adverse effect of cryolipolysis. As a result of this, as Linda wrote, it had not only destroyed her livelihood but also sent her into a cycle of deep depression, profound sadness, and the lowest depths of self-loathing thanks to which, she became a recluse.

Linda Evangelista - The Procedure

But what exactly is the procedure that Evangelista underwent. She said that it was CoolSculpting which is the brand name for a fat-freezing method that aims to get rid of stubborn fat in certain parts of the body, the method for which is called cryolipolysis. It was thought of by scientists by studying what happened to fat during frostbite, as fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin. The procedure isn’t surgery and it does not use needles. The device holds the part of the body that the doctor wants to target, between two paddles. They cool quickly and are left in place for anywhere between 35 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes. During that time, the process destroys about 20-25% of the fat cells, while leaving the skin and other tissues unharmed. This procedure was approved by the FDA in 2010. A possible side effect of this procedure is the aforementioned Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, in which rather than the fat being reduced, the area that was treated gets gradually enlarged. However, it is worth pointing out that this phenomenon of PAH has a reported rate of incidence of 0.0051% of the 1.5 million CoolSculting procedures performed worldwide. So less than 1%.

Linda Evangelista - Correction Surgery

It has been reported that PAH can be corrected and one way of doing so is by undergoing a laser-assisted liposuction procedure. In her post, Linda had revealed that after the procedure had increased rather than decreased her fat cells, she had undergone “two painful corrective surgeries”, though she did not specify what they were. Though unfortunately for the model, both of those surgeries had turned out to be unsuccessful. And as the previously mentioned use of the word permanently suggests, this is something that might not be reversible.

Linda Evangelista - Lawsuit

As a result of all that happened to her, which made this model unable to work in her career, she has decided to file a lawsuit against ZELTIQ Aesthetics because of the cosmetic procedure. As she wrote in her post, she is moving forward to rid herself of the shame, adding that she is tired of living this way and that she would love to walk out of her door with her head held high despite not looking like herself anymore. According to Reuters, Evangelista had filed the lawsuit in a New York federal court for negligence, misleading advertising, and alleging that the company failed to warn customers of the possible side effects. The suit says that Linda underwent multiple procedures between 2015 and 2016 to reduce fat on her thighs, abdomen, back, flanks, and chin. She is now seeking $50 million in damages for lost income and emotional distress, saying that she is now unemployable as a model and has not earned anything from modeling since 2016.

Lauren Wasser - Another Extremely Rare Case

While Evangelista’s case was so rare, less than 1%, there was another model who also suffered terribly from another rare condition. Namely, Toxic Shock Syndrome which most often is caused by the use of tampons and which according to the National Organization of Rare Diseases, only affects up to 3 out of every 100,000 menstruating women in the United States alone. While TSS is notoriously linked to tampon use, the infection doesn’t just impact menstruating women but can also develop from surgical wounds, childbirth, abortion, miscarriage, history of using a diaphragm, or even a local infection in the skin. After contracting TSS, one model, Lauren Wasser was fighting for her life. As she revealed in interviews, this happened in 2012 when she was just 24-years-old and that first, she experienced flu-like symptoms, then renal failure and two heart attacks. Not only did she have one in a several thousand case illness doctors had given her a 1% chance of survival while placing her in a medically-induced coma. After waking up she found out that gangrene had set into her right leg and left foot which meant that she had to have her right leg amputated. Then a few years later in 2018, her left leg was amputated as well. Though now for Wasser things had improved, using gold prosthetics, the model plays basketball and trained for the New York marathon and fighting for change within the world of period-care products, as well as more inclusivity in the world of fashion.
